| Family Health Centers The Good Samaritan Family Health Center is located on the northwest side of Dayton, one block from Good Samaritan Hospital, and the Indian Ripple Family Health Center is located east of Dayton conveniently off I-675 about five miles from Kettering Medical Center. The Indian Ripple Family Health Center is primarily a faculty practice that can be used for an outpatient rotation. Both centers have been designed to meet the educational needs of our residents as well as our patients’ health care needs. The spacious centers include a reception area, business and records office, preceptor library/office, resident and faculty offices, conference room, procedures/operating suites, nurses station, laboratory and patient education/computer center. The Family Health Centers function as independent private medical offices under the guidance of the family physicians on our teaching staff. Our faculty includes board certified practitioners, who serve as preceptors on a daily basis and practice alongside residents in the health centers. Weekly conferences take place in our spacious conference rooms.
Because family medicine is primarily an ambulatory specialty, we consider office hours to be of crucial importance. This philosophy is reflected in the residents’ commitment to maintain office hours on a regular basis. Our residency utilizes a team approach to patient care with the residents organized into group practices. Residents begin their private practice when they start their training. The first-year residents spend one to two half days per week in the office, while second- and third-year residents spend two to four half days per week. Nursing home and home visits with faculty support are also conducted on a regular basis.
The patient population served by the program is diverse in terms of age, socioeconomic background and ethnic and racial status, providing our residents with a variety of diagnosis and management challenges. At the Good Samaritan site, a full-time medical technologist assists with the performance of testing. A two-week elective is offered to our residents to certify them as physician-office laboratory directors. Our procedure rooms feature colposcopy, laryngoscopy, spirometry and cryotherapy.
Practice management expertise is provided through ongoing residency seminars, a required rotation, and community-wide seminars. Hospital computers, located within the centers, provide direct access for our residents to answer clinical questions and help manage the ongoing care of their hospitalized patients. Our program enables residents to effectively utilize consultants and referrals as needed and videotaping facilities are available for residents to hone their interviewing skills.
Our residents often comment that coming to office hours is like “coming home” and provides them with a rich blend of experiences with a continual focus on the care of the family. <top>
